Join staff and students from the University of Central Lancashire under The People’s Canopy in Preston’s Flag Market for a day of discussions, talks, performances and hands-on activities, which celebrate the creativity and world-changing research taking place at UCLan. Get active with a Zumba class, enjoy a music performance, discuss architecture and urban design, and find out about human cells whilst decorating biscuits. With ‘hands-on’ science activities for the under-fives and astrophysics lectures for the more advanced, there’s something for everyone!

 Highlights include:

11am – 3pm:  Analysing Algae with the Lancashire Science Festival
Learn about algae in this ‘hands-on’ workshop.

11am – 3pm:  Cell Cookies with the Young Science Centre
Take a closer look at cells whilst making delicious treats. We’ll be decorating biscuits to look like human cells, using sweets to represent the different parts of the cell.

12.15-12.30 and 1.15-1.30: Living with a star
Public talk by astrophysicist Professor Robert Walsh.

1pm – 2pm: Re-imagining Preston -Designs for Stoneygate
Students of Architecture at the University of Central Lancashire have worked with councillors at the City and architects in the County to propose changes to the Stoneygate area of Preston. Proposals address issues of connection, community and contradiction in an area with significant potential to redefine the City. Join us to have your say on what you think should happen in the area.

1.30pm – 2pm: Music performance
A group of musicians, most of them brand new arrivals to Preston, will perform an improvised piece using hand signals to co-ordinate gestures and create structure. Featuring first year students of UCLan BA (Hons) Music.

1.30pm: Chinese Dragon Dance
Watch a performance by Preston’s very own dragon, courtesy of UCLan’s Confucius Institute and Face Restaurant.

1.30pm – 3pm: Illustration class
Illustration students will create new work under the canopies. Come along to see the results, or try out your own drawing skills.

2pm – 3pm: Zumba class
Get fit and have fun by taking part in this outdoor Zumba class, led by instructors from the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre.

2pm – 3pm: Tai Chi demonstration
